What is Emsculpt?

Emsculpt is a nonsurgical procedure that creates muscle definition and burns fat in your butt and around your abs and obliques. It also recently gained approval for treating biceps, triceps, thighs, and calves.

How much does Emsculpt cost?

RealSelf members say the cost of Emsculpt is $3,200 on average, but keep in mind that each session of Emsculpt costs about $1,000 and a series of four initial sessions is recommended for best results—so you might end up paying more than $4,000.

The upside is that you’ll spend less time working out. Encino, California, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Persky says, “The emsculpting cost effectiveness is relative. Each treatment offers the equivalent of 20,000 crunches or squats in a 30-minute period. That's going to save you a great deal of time.” (Just remember: you’ll still need a healthy diet and regular exercise to maintain your results.)

If you come across a provider advertising the cost of Emsculpt treatment for substantially less than the usual rate, doctors on RealSelf caution you to make sure you’re getting the real thing. “If a price is lower than what experts are quoting, be sure that you’ll be treated with an authentic Emsculpt device,” cautions San Diego dermatologic surgeon Dr. Melanie Palm.

How does Emsculpt work?

Using high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM), the Emsculpt device delivers electromagnetic pulses to the muscles and creates supramaximal muscle contractions, activating more muscle fibers than do the contractions you’d achieve through normal exercise.

One 30-minute session produces nearly 20,000 muscle contractions. Contracting repeatedly without rest stresses the muscles, triggering rapid changes at the cellular level that make them grow bigger and stronger.

To supply energy for so many muscle contractions, neighboring fat cells break down, via a process called lipolysis, and release fatty acids. Fat cells are damaged to the point where they die, and the body naturally eliminates them.

The result of the combined action of muscle tightening and fat-cell destruction is stronger, more defined muscles.

Who's a good candidate for Emsculpt?

Emsculpt is considered safe for all skin tones. The procedure works best for people who are already relatively fit and want to firm up. “The ideal candidate is really anyone who’s looking to get stronger muscles and a stronger core, who wants to be tighter and burn fat,” explains San Diego dermatologic surgeon Dr. Eugene Nowak.

Because it addresses only muscle tone and overlying fat, it’s not a good procedure for skin tightening. If you have skin laxity after pregnancy or significant weight loss, a tummy tuck or body lift may be more effective options. It also doesn’t improve the appearance of cellulite.

Can Emsculpt help with diastasis recti?

Emsculpt can also reduce muscle separation in the abs, a symptom of diastasis recti, a condition where your abdominal muscles separate (usually during pregnancy) and create a belly pooch.

It’s the only nonsurgical treatment to shown to be effective in treating abdominal separation. Doctors on RealSelf recommend a tummy tuck for more significant results, but they say Emsculpt is a good option for avoiding surgery.

While both Coolsculpting and Emsculpt can help you achieve a more toned appearance, they are different in several ways. Coolsculpting works to reduce fat in more stubborn areas of the body and helps to uncover the muscle definition you may already have. However, coolsculpting does not work to build muscle. However, Emsculpt works to build new muscle fibers in the body as well as working existing threads for a sculpted appearance. Essentially, Coolsculpting begins the process of fat metabolism and Emsculpt tones muscles.

The technology between the two treatments is also different. Coolsculpting uses cryo lipolysis. An applicator suctions the skin and fatty tissue into a controlled and cold temperature, which stimulates fat cells to die. Emsculpt uses high-intensity electromagnetic technology. This technology induces involuntary supramaximal muscle contractions in the area being treated. Although no fat cells are directly destroyed in Emsculpt, some patients may experience some fat loss due to increasing muscle mass because muscle is metabolically active tissue.

Although both treatments offer different results, they go hand in hand. To achieve the results of a slimmer and more toned body, it may be recommended to undergo coolsculpting treatments first to destroy fat cells in some areas and then using Emculpt as a way to increase the toned muscle appearance.

What are the pros and cons of Emsculpt?

Pros

While CoolSculpting and similar techniques simply remove fat, Emsculpt also tones muscles. It can be a good option for people who don’t have a lot of excess fat but want a more defined physique.

It’s a fat-reduction option for people who aren’t candidates for liposuction and nonsurgical body-contouring treatments because they don’t have enough body fat.

Having just four treatments yields visible results: RealSelf members who said it was "Worth It" saw an impressive increase in muscle tone. Some also noted a boost in strength that helped them achieve more during their workouts.

Cons

People with a few extra pounds to lose may not see as much of a change, because the fat can act as a barrier between the magnetic coil and the muscles, reducing the strength of the muscle contractions during treatment. Ideal candidates have less than an inch of pinchable fat in the treated area, according to research by a medical advisor to Emsculpt’s manufacturer, BTL.

A small percentage of RealSelf members who rated it "Not Worth It" said they were disappointed after not seeing dramatic results.

How many Emsculpt sessions are recommended?

Four sessions are recommended, typically spaced two to five days apart, over a two-week period.

Additional sessions beyond that won’t hurt, but they may not improve results either. “Current studies have shown that results tend to plateau after four sessions,” says Dr. Nicole Hayre, a dermatologic surgeon in McLean, Virginia, in a RealSelf Q&A. “Therefore, extra sessions will likely not increase the benefits of the treatment.”

Follow-up sessions every six months, paired with regular exercise, can help to maintain results.

What happens during an Emsculpt treatment?

You’ll lie on the doctor’s table, and the paddle-like applicator attached to the Emsculpt machine will be strapped onto the target area. Expect the treatment to last about 30 minutes.

If it’s your first time getting Emsculpt, your doctor will start the device on its lowest setting. As it begins sending high-intensity electromagnetic energy to the target muscles, you’ll feel them contract powerfully. The feeling can be strange—like you’re in the middle of an intense workout, though your body isn’t actually doing anything—but it shouldn’t hurt. In fact, some people find the feeling so unusual that they laugh.

Your provider will gradually increase the intensity as much as you can tolerate, asking you if you’re comfortable as it ramps up. Most people studied were able to endure close to the maximum level of intensity by the end of their first session, which doctors encourage for best results. Over time, you may be able to start your treatments at higher settings.

The contractions will cycle through different phases. Some will be rapid and light, and some will be slower and more powerful. The Emsculpt machine will contract your muscles hundreds or thousands of times, in just a few seconds. During the last phase of treatment, the muscle contractions will be slow but powerful, to flush out any toxins or lactic acid released during the procedure and help reduce soreness.
