Then, in September we officially reopened with a ton of new restrictions. Luckily a lot of you who started with us in February stuck it out with us, and then we had a bunch of amazing humans join us from September to December. We launched our new Iron Monkey Rite of Passage program and have had the privilege of watching a lot of you really develop into competent lifters! Nice work!Our Intern, Nick, completes the Rite of Passage and nals a 3 Rep max Deadlift at 105kg! He also increased his TGU weight to 18kg. Strong Work Nick!What's the News?!It’s official! We have added 8AM-10AM to our hours on Monday through Friday (M-Th 8AM-9PM, Friday 8AM-4PM, Saturday 10AM-2PM). We’re considering further expansion of our hours depending on the need. If you want to train at 7AM we can do that too, but you need to schedule it 12 hours in advance or Jesse will NOT be there.The StrongFirst Tactical Strength Challenge (TSC) is scheduled for May 8th, and yes we’re hosting it. This is a super fun community challenge to test your ability in the company of your comrades. There are 3 events: Deadlift (3 attempts for max weight), Pullups/Flexed arm hang (for reps or time), and kettlebell snatches (for reps in 5 minutes). This event takes place on the same day in 22 countries around the world! How awesome to know that in a 24 hour period so many people will be doing some Strong stuff on the same day. Hey ,How have you been? We are living in strange and often very stressful times. It’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about. How out of control things feel. I’ve heard a similar sentiment from some you here at the gym. In a world that’s crazy and unpredictable, it’s nice to have something to rely on. That’s what the iron is to me. My training, the work I do, I’m in control of that. I can affect that. It’s empowering to be able to pull 100 or 200kg off the floor or press 36kg overhead. There is a comfort in knowing that when I come to the gym, the barbell, the kettlebell, the platforms are waiting for me. I hope some of you feel that way too. I hope your training, your workouts, are helping with your mental health as much as they are with your physical. Anyway, I want you to know we’re here for you too. Nick has chosen to intern with us for the rest of the Fall and we’re super excited to be a part of his development and for him to see the amazing stuff you all are doing here!When we opened in February we were primarily a Small Group Training Gym, but with the business closures in March and the occupancy restrictions placed on all gyms, we’ve been forced to change our business model. We’re now predominantly a Personal Training Gym that offers 2 very distinct services. There is the obvious one on one training, and then there is the more novel Supervised Training model. All of our “Open Lifters” are using this service now. What’s the difference between Supervised Training and just going to the gym? Great question! In Supervised Training you’re assigned a program, and when exercising in our gym you’re always getting coaching or help. Here, everyone always has a coach. We love that, and we love being able to help all of you to excel and reach your goals.Changes we have made and will makeFor one, we’re looking to expand our hours of operation. Look for an email sometime next month with details on what the new hours and policy are.Secondly, we have changed our appointment policy. You will have to book your appointments for 1:1 Coaching or Monkey Rite of Passage sessions on the MindBody App no later than 6 hours in advance. If you’re within that window and still want to book, you’ll have to contact us to do so. Supervised Open Training has also been changed to no later than 1 hour prior to when you plan to come in and lift. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a BIG proponent for writing my training down. Yep, good old fashioned pen and paper! That’s me though, but you don’t have to do it that way -as long as you do it. It can be on a cell phone or computer spreadsheet. Whatever it takes to track what you’ve done and plan what you’re going to do. I’m not here to convince you to use a pen and paper, but on the other hand you wouldn’t have to worry about battery life.Let’s talk a minute about why I’m such a stickler for tracking and journaling. Well it goes way back to when I first started to seriously train myself in the gym. I’m a believer that success leaves breadcrumbs and if you want to be successful in something look at what those who have succeeded before you have done. So, I looked around, and you know what I saw? All the people who looked really serious about what they’re doing in the gym carried around some version of a little notebook and a pencil. huh. Maybe there’s something to that.So, I started writing out what it is I planned to do weekly. On Sunday, I’d write each day on it’s own page leaving plenty of space to write notes. Then each day I trained I’d check off what I did, or write in any changes. You know what I found? This shit really works! HiWe’re getting closer to my target re-opening date of July 6th 🙌, and that means I need to share with you some of the things I’ve been working on in preparation. I’ve made some big improvements to the space and to our programs.Our biggest improvement is the new Eleiko SVR Platform. This 7x8 foot platform is the quietest platform I have ever seen! We’ve dropped over 200kg and you can’t feel it anywhere -it’s amazing 😍. Next you’ll notice some improvements on space. We added 2 new whiteboards for writing down workouts, and got rid of some bulky equipment that was just taking up space. We’re not done yet, but some things have been backordered or difficult to obtain and so you’ll see that things just continue to get better every week.On the program side I have 2 new and exciting things to share. First is our Monkey Rite of Passage (MRP) Program. As most of you know, you can’t lift without a private training session unless you’ve earned Supervised Open Lifting Privileges. What This program does is give you a clear path to earning your privileges and your Open Lift Pin 💪💪. MRP is a 12 week comprehensive exercise and lifting program. In 12 weeks a participant learns all of the fundamental Kettlebell and Barbell Strength (swings, deadlifts, getups, presses, squats and more!) exercises as well as a few other things. It consists of 2 private coaching sessions and 1 supervised lifting session a week. All sessions are delivered to you via the TrainHeroic App on your phone or tablet.Next is we’re super proud to announce an 8 week Beginner Olympic Weightlifting Program. The program assumes that the student has already completed the MRP or has demonstrated competent skill in the basic lifts needed to learn the Olympic Lifts: the Barbell Snatch, Clean and Jerk. By the end of this program the student will be able to competently execute the quick lifts, and will learn some valuable accessory lifts and exercises to help them refine their skills. If you want to learn to Oly lift well, and mitigate your chances for injury -this is for you! In addition, upon completion of the program, all students will receive an exclusive Iron Monkey Strength Oly Lifter Pin/badge to celebrate their achievement.This brings me to our next announcement: We are launching our new Merit Pin program. This program establishes Lifting and Feat of Strength milestones for our students to train and reach for and celebrates those achievements with collectable pins. These pins are all original art, and are beautifully designed and crafted. If you don’t follow us on Instagram you need to start (@ironmonkeystrength)! We’ll be revealing over the next 6 months what each Pin looks like and how you can earn it. What makes this so exciting is, it is exactly what separates our little school from other studios and gyms. We’re starting with just 4 which will bring the total number of pins to 6. HeyWow it’s been awhile since I’ve seen your beautiful face 😍. How the hell are you?! 😁This pandemic has really disrupted everyone’s lives, and I wanted to let you know that we’re here with you. I know we’re not all in the same boat, but we are in the same storm. So I hope you weathering this thing well, and that you and your families are healthy and safe.On our side of stuff, I’ve been hard at work upgrading some things at the gym and making it the cleanest and safest place for you to workout and train. Your safety and health is really important to me and so I’m going above and beyond with my cleaning and safety protocols.I’m expecting to be open officially by July 6th.💪 Our current plan is to restrict our services to one on one training and open lift (for those who have earned the privilege). Originally I planned to keep it so that only one person will be in the studio at a time, but I’ve amended that plan to allow for 2 at a time. This means that if you’re an open lifter you’ll have to reserve your training time in advance. We’re working on a way to make it easy to do through Mindbody, but if that fails just call the studio or email/text us.We’re going to be doing all the things the other businesses are doing. Temperature checks at the door and a quick survey about contact/exposure and symptoms. No mask required, but you’re welcome to wear one if you want to.In addition: Every training space has been divided into 10ft x 10 ft “pods” which should allow for plenty of good social distancing. Each area can be easily equipped with any equipment you need and there will be no need for sharing. Each area also has a “care cart” equipped with hand sanitizer, cleaning spray and towels, tissues, and little personal garbage can. We’ll be doing several thorough cleanings throughout the day.We’ve partnered with ViKn Performance Chalk to supply you with your own personal block of chalk🙌. You’ll be responsible for bringing your chalk with you -so don’t forget it. I hope you can see how much we care about your safety! I can promise you this -you will not find a cleaner and safer place to workout or train.Current Strength Squad(the group class) students will continue to get a program and open lift privileges. These are exceptional and trying times for all of us. I've done a lot of thinking, and I think it's really important that everyone be able to train at home if it's at all possible. I know some of you don't have any equipment at home, but don't frett! We've got you.
