Let me be clear, I am NOT a music therapist.While I am a firm believer in the amazing power of music to help children and adults grow and develop (or heal), I am not trained as a therapist. I love and respect that profession.But I DO love working with ALL kinds of students.For instance, many of our teachers currently work with students “on the spectrum.” We do it with the same objectives we use for all our students: recognize a student’s innate strengths and interests and use music as a tool to grow their abilities.We even are using Zoom to reach out and work with entire classes of children and adults with special needs to integrate music into their educational day!We have some students that suffer with anxiety. The pressure of trying to perform on a musical instrument could be intense. Instead, but use positive affirmations and a variety of relaxed activities to help students feel safe and comfortable.You will always see a majority of our day spent with children, but we LOVE our adult students as well. They are so clear about why they value making music and we love helping them use music in their everyday lives.Then there are also the students that will knock your socks off. The ones that finish a book in weeks instead of months, or come into class with an original song they created and wrote down at home. Challenging a student like this to use their full potential can be a lot of work, but we have special resources just for them too!My point is, our Music Bus, Music Maker, and Excel programs are each designed to help individual students achieve their personal dreams and goals through music.The best way to make sure we help YOUR student learn THEIR way is to sit down with a teacher for a free consultation. Imagine your child doesn’t just struggle through a couple of pages of homework after music lessons...instead they come home and talk about how they collaborated with a friend to write their own song, then sit down and improvise their own song. Then show off their two favorite songs from memory, and talk about a famous composer or artist they recently learned about. This is what a student looks like when they are truly ENGAGED in making music.As the director here at NewSongs, one of the experiences that was important to me in my own musical growth was the transition from lessons to college. As much as I enjoyed lessons, my college experience gave me a much BROADER experience about music (for instance, piano players don’t often join band or orchestra groups). I am naturally very curious so I loved the chance to learn lots of DIFFERENT things about music--I enjoyed composing, arranging, exploring more genres, and gaining a deeper understanding of the “language of music.”Mr. Roger, our ensemble director, has similar values but from very different experiences. He grew up playing with any and all garage bands he could, using music to build relationships with others and get the opportunity to perform for others and travel to new places. With a limited number of socially-distanced musicians at each rehearsal, our students can still get together once a week to make music together. Our ensemble players LOVE their experience.Ensembles are part of our "Excel" program, which is $189 per month for students (INCLUDING private lesson tuition).A chamber (small group) ensemble class for up to six students, meeting one hour, once per week, for $59 per month per student. We are looking forward to a new style of performances for the fall, until county restrictions change and we can begin to plan additional options.For now, we have the following options:Live-from-Home music makers Film your solo from home--dress up, remember to introduce yourself, take a bow and everything! Send us your video and we will release it (lobby video, social media, etc)Every Saturday from 4 to 5 pm we will have five students come into the studio at NewSongs. Students will perform for the camera (and one another) in a recital-like setup, but with extra distancing and cleaning between numbers--we will give you the space and safety so you can perform on stage without a mask so we can see your face! Videos will then be shown for the week in our lobby, on social media and our YouTube channel to share with others. Note, some weeks will be hosted by a particular teacher so check with yours about signing up, otherwise weeks are available for signup on first-come first served basisOur "Excel" program is featuring one student or small group each week in a special video concert. We call it our "Corner Concerts" (inspired by NPR's "Tiny Desk"), and will feature a set of 3 to 5 songs. Another way we at NewSongs support our commmunity is through the Red Note Youth Orchestra program. Last year, their beginning violin classes met on campus at Roy Herburger Elementary, and we were ramping up for additional campuses this year. We want our students HEALTHY and SAFE. And we want to see them succeed and thrive in their lessons.July 13th we adjusted to announcements by our governor and we have been watching new health info regularly. Safety guidelines and considerations change often and we are working to stay current on the best practices for a healthy and safe environment for our students.We are able to meet the CDC guidelines for schools released July 23, schools should be:1) promoting behaviors that reduce spread (e.g. social distancing, washing hands and wearing cloth face coverings),2) maintaining healthy environments (e.g., ensuring proper ventilation, cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces)3) maintaining healthy operations (e.g., staggering schedules, keeping students in small groups), and4) preparing for when someone gets sick(note that we are not a "school" according to county rules, we are in "educational services", but we are using these CDC guidelines as a basis to ensure we have the best safety in place we can)We feel that we have met this criteria with our current sanitation, scheduling, and similar policies. We also are fully prepared to offer students lessons via Zoom or similar video platforms either short term (in case of symptoms of illness) or longer (if you are more comfortable learning from home to eliminate other exposure risks).Therefore, we are waiting one last to watch for any more new announcements including CDC and local authorities, but if no new risk factors are developing we are planning for a RE-REOPENING on August 10th.If you have moved to outdoor lessons in the morning, you can return to your previously scheduled afternoon appointment indoors. If you would like to request continuing outdoor lessons in the morning (mornings are selected due to the possibility of high heat) people let us know and we will do our best to accommodate that request, based on the demand.We will continue all of our prior safety protocols including one way traffic, non-contact plans, masks, sanitized piano keys, and many other steps. This week we moved back to Zoom as our County closed non-essential indoor offices. For most of our students, this distance learning is working very well, but we want to ensure we have to best options we can for all our music makers. Therefore if you prefer to meet in person, we have gotten autorization to meet OUTDOORS (sorry for the terrible picture, but you may be able to see how our tent classrooms are arranged in the shade of the back parking lot). We are meeting in the MORNINGS to beat the heat and currently have three stations or tents set up so they don't interfere with one another. We don't know how long these restrictions will be in place, right now I am planning on the next two weeks (the remainder of July) and we will make announcements later if we will continue this into August as well.To choose this option, just enter your name in an available slot on the spread sheet. There are three teachers each day and each teacher has five available times. While “music instruction” never gets conclusively classified, my wife and I are trying to take a conservative interpretation and as a “non-essential indoor office” I feel that we are expected to close in-person lessons at this time. We will offer ALL lessons the remainder of the week on Zoom.If you are pressed for time, feel free to make sure you have Zoom login info still handy from your teacher (if you are new to us, contact us for it and we can even set up a “practice” call), or you may still be using remote learning and you are good to go. You can stop reading here if you want, but I am going to go on a little about my current thoughts for our school and our musical families adapting for the next few weeks (timeframes are not set in CA).I am very GRATEFUL we are able to adapt and offer our services online. Since March, we have kept our entire team employed, with the exception of one teacher that chose to take some time off. That is only possible because of your commitment to stick with us and your willingness to communicate with us about what you need and help us improve,I’m also SAD, we were just getting our sense of “normal” and “routine,” and I am really looking forward to “coming back”...Again (sigh). However, making the safest and most careful choices for all our students and our staff is a priority right now.I worry about our students and the challenges they are facing with the next school year coming up. I believe that music is, in a sense, an “essential” activity that allows our students to be creative, deal with complex emotions, and connect with others by expressing themselves even if they can’t be “together.” I am working on a variety of “distance learning” style options to offer elementary schools in our area as we can because I WANT as many kids as possible to be making music during this time.That being said, here are some tentative “add ons” I am working onA limited amount of outdoor one on one lessons (likely in the morning to avoid the heat, under some pop up tents in the back parking lot….working on the logisticsContinuing to use student Musico.io accounts and other technology elements to give students lots of content to practice and enjoy.Monthly performance live streamed (similar to our big concert in May, but live instead of pre-recorded)Possible neighborhood outdoor performances (like a “porch” or “driveway” mini concert with a socially distanced audience)....again, pending safety and logisticsDreaming what else we can provide. Our summer ensemble program is one week long where students get to meet every day and collaborate with music.Students that have been isolated or bored can get out with a small group of students with plenty of space for social distancing, but still the chance to play music together and learn some of the most iconic music.Spaces are extrememly limited. This camp is for students age 9 and up with some prior experience, but does not require being intermediate or advanced.
