We are located at 2499 N. 50th Street in the Wynnefield / City Avenue / Bala Cynwyd area of West Philadelphia, PA 19131. Nestled at the Ground Floor of the Bala Apartments (at the corner of 50th and City Ave.), we are convenient to public transportation and right across the street from the Bala Regional Rail Line Train Station.
The studio offers: focused and specialized exercise and fitness training workouts like Spinning®, Zumba Dance Fitness®, MixxedFit, Total Body Conditioning, Yoga and/or other types of Group Exercise classes.
There is NO MEMBERSHIP FEE and you can sign-up in advance and pay online or via our app! (see app information below).

Ugh! Chantel Can't Lead MixxedFit on Saturdays!
I just sent an email telling you that we'd have two MixxedFit Classes; one on Tuesdays with Tymika at 7pm, and one on Saturdays with Chantel at 10:30am. I just sent it a couple of days ago! 🤪Come to find out, Chantel can no longer lead a class on Saturdays! Spinning is back!
It's been a long time coming but Spinning is back!Saturday, October 3, 2020. 9:15am$39.99 for three classes.(No GROUPON or Discounts)More classes will be added but for now we only have the one.We have a shield in front of the lead Spinning bike and I wear a mask!All participants must wear a mask during the entire time in the Studio.We have an air purifier in the room.As air moves through the filter, pollutants and particles are captured and the clean air is pushed back out into the space. This happens continuously!Social Distancing. The lead bike is 6 feet away from the first row. Only 8 participants are allow in the room at a time.Purifiers are most effective with windows closed.Can we have it both ways – clean air AND open windows?With the window closed, tests show reduced particulates by an average of 90% after 20 minutes. With the window open, tests show reduced particulates by 60%.The data shows that it’s clearly better to close the windows with running your air purifier. CAVEAT: Even with the windows open, it’s still possible to significantly reduce indoor particulates by turning on an air purifier (60% vs 90%)We care about you! 8 Relaxing Total Body Stretches 😊👍
Dear SMART Customers,Cardio and strength training, or some combination of the two, are the cornerstones of any solid workout program. But one of the most overlooked elements of a comprehensive program comes at the end of the workout—stretching.Stretching is something you probably know you should be doing. It's also the part of the workout that's very easy to skip. You may think you don't have time for it or don't need it. But a stretch session is one of the best ways to end any workout.Stretching when your muscles are warm has a number of benefits:You don't have to spend a lot of time on stretching exercises to get the benefits. This total body flexibility workout proves it with stretches so simple, you can do them anytime or anywhere—after a workout, at work, or when you're at home watching TV.These exercises promote flexibility and relaxation. They target all the major muscles of the body, including those that are chronically tight like the chest, shoulders, back, arms, hips, and legs. Try to stretch every day, if you can, for better results.Try these stretching exercises to get rid of any extra tension you may be carrying around.You will need a chair, exercise ball, or bench to sit on. Warm up with 5 to 10 minutes of light cardio first, or do this after a workout or a bath when your muscles are warm.Hold each stretch for 10 to 30 seconds and repeat one to three times. Avoid any exercises that cause pain or discomfort and only stretch as deep as you can. The stretch should feel good and shouldn't hurt. If your muscles are shaking, you need to back off a bit and let your muscles relax more. Quad Stretch Stand and hold onto a wall or the back of a chair for balance if needed. Grab the top of the left foot and bend your knee, bringing the foot towards the glutes, knee pointing straight at the floor. You should feel a stretch down the front of your leg. Squeeze your hips forward for a deeper stretch. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds and switch sides, repeating one to three times per leg. Standing Hamstring Stretch Take your left foot forward and tip from the hips, keeping the back flat. Lower down until you feel a stretch in the back of the leg. Rest the hands on the upper thighs to give your back some support. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds and switch sides, repeating one to three times. If you feel shaky or your hamstrings are tight, try using a resistance band to give you more leverage. Chest and Shoulder Stretch Sit or stand and clasp your hands together behind your back, arms straight. Lift your hands towards the ceiling, going only as high as is comfortable. You should feel a stretch in your shoulders and chest. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds, repeating one to three times. If your shoulders are a little tight, try just taking your arms behind you and out to the sides like an airplane. Upper Back Stretch Clasp your hands together in front of you and round your back, pressing your arms away from your body to feel a stretch in your upper back. Contract the abs to get the most out of this stretch. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds, repeating one to three times.Bicep Stretch Take your arms out to the sides, slightly behind you, with your thumbs up, like a hitchhiker. Rotate your thumbs down and back until they are pointing to the back wall to stretch the biceps. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds, repeating one to three times. Shoulder Stretch Take your right arm straight across your chest and curl the left hand around your elbow, gently pulling on the right arm to deepen the stretch in the shoulders. Try dropping the shoulder down if you're not feeling a stretch. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds and switch sides, repeating one to three times on each side. Seated Side Stretch Sitting or standing, clasp your hands straight up overhead, palms facing the ceiling. Stretch up and then over to the right, feeling a stretch down your left side. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds and switch sides, repeating one to three times. 1. Stop Waiting to Feel Like ExercisingToo often, we wait for the motivation to exercise, but often times, the workout itself comes before the motivation to do it. Committing to something more often may come before you feel the motivation, and that's okay.What to Do InsteadCreate your own motivation.--Write your goal on a piece of paper and put it on your alarm clock or your steering wheel. That reminder may be enough to get you started, which is always the hardest part.--Don't skip your workout - Before you give up, ask yourself some questions like, will you regret your decision? How will you make up that missed workout? Don't let yourself off the hook until you've made a reasoned, rational decision.--Make sure you're doing the right workouts for you - Assess your workout routine and make sure you like what you're doing - or at least sort of like it. No way you'll do it if you hate your workouts! 2. Stop Overdoing ItWhat to do...--When we go all weekend warrior, we set ourselves up for even more failure, trying to sustain an impossible level of exercise and becoming vulnerable to burnout, injury, and, of course, more failure.--Ease into it - Maybe it makes you feel better to kill yourself with exercise, but that will only last until the next morning when you can't get out of bed. Yes, it's slower, but you'll make real, lasting progress if you take your time and gradually build intensity.--Keep it simple - Don't let guilt drive your workouts. Instead, set up a program that matches your current fitness level, not how fit you used to be. If it's only been a week or two, you can probably go back to a pared down version of your previous workouts. If it's been weeks, months or years, keep it simple.--Hire a trainer - If you have a history of starting and stopping exercise, this may be a good time to call in the experts. You may simply need some tweaking to your program or some new ideas for how to exercise and stick with it.3. Stop the ExcusesOddly enough, people who exercise have the same issues and obligations, yet they somehow manage to exercise every day.4. Stop Setting Unrealistic GoalsExercise isn't a magic bullet, no matter how great I make it sound, and despite what you may see in magazines or infomercials, there's no shortcut to weight loss. The truth is, it takes more exercise than you think to lose weight and it takes more time than you think. In fact, it could take up to a year to see real, permanent changes, simply because it often takes that amount of time to learn how to get around all the obstacles in your life.5. Stop Thinking It Will Be EasyExercisers make it look easy, but it's not. If you want to change your body, you have to get out of your comfort zone and challenge your body with more than it's used to.6. Stop Waiting for the Perfect TimeWe're always waiting for things to calm down but when does that actually happen? If we're lucky, we may get a week or two now and then when life isn't utter chaos. Don't try changing your schedule to fit a workout. Instead, try fitting a workout into your schedule, even if it's just 10 minutes at a time.7. Stop Being Afraid to FailForget what you did wrong and focus on what you can do right.8. Stop Sabotaging YourselfAs we all know, thinking we'll just 'squeeze in a workout' whenever we have time never works. If you end up having extra time, which never happens, are you really going to work out? No. You're probably going to check email or Facebook or Instagram or maybe play a game of Candy Crush, right? So avoid these pitfalls.9. Stop Going it AloneMany people are afraid to hire a trainer or dietician for help. Maybe it's the cost or maybe you're embarrassed to talk about how much you suck to a stranger. Luckily, professionals are just that - professionals who are in business specifically to help people with these issues.10. Stop Trying to be PerfectWhen you're not perfect, you feel bad about yourself. And when you feel bad about yourself, you want to feel better. And how do you make yourself feel better? With a workout? What an awesome class!On Friday, July 31st we had our first Walking Class. If you remember we couldn't start the class because our instructor Eziaku, sprained her ankle...plus it has been raining for the last few Fridays 😒 So, we started the 8 week class last Friday.😀The class consists of walking for 15 minutes and then stopping to do: Squats, Lunges, Upper Body, and standing Abs. Then we continue to walk. We continue this circuit until we reach 1 mile and then we turn around and return to the starting point. As you've probably heard by now, Philadelphia cannot re-open gyms until August!We're not letting that stop us...not really 😀You've hopefully read about our two outdoor classes in our last email: Boot Camp and 2-5 Mile Fitness. They will meet at the Art Museum on Thursday, July 9th and Friday, July 10th for 8 weeks.Well, we've added another one: Yoga!Our outdoor Yoga class will meet in the SMART Fitness Studio Courtyard. The Courtyard is to the right of the front door. You have to walk up the steps of 2499 N. 50th Street and follow the path to the right! (I'll be there to direct you.)Starting July 13th at 6:30pm. 6 Classes for $36 dollars. Denine, our regular instructor will lead the class. Each member of the class can bring their own mat or you can borrow one of my mats from the Studio. Dear SMART Customers,I hope this email finds you and your loved ones in good health.It has been about 4 months since we temporarily suspended operations at SMART Fitness Studio and we hardly had a change to say goodbye! 🙁 But if there's one thing I know for sure...the entire Studio staff shares in my sentiment: we’ve missed you and eagerly look forward to welcoming you back! 😀😄😊🤗As this unforeseen disruption winds down, we will soon be communicating our re-opening date.During this closure, we have developed a plan for our Studio, carefully following guidance from the CDC and local governments. We will share more on how we’ve further elevated our high commitment to health standards in the next email.Our world may look and feel different, but SMART Fitness Studio continues to remain committed to providing the attentive and personalized service you have come to expect from us.In keeping with this philosophy, we have updated our booking policy. There will be 8 spots open in our Multi-purpose room for cardio classes: Zumba and MixxedFit and 8 spots open in our Spinning room. There will be 6 spots available for our Yoga class and 6 spots available for our Strength class.Signing-up at least one hour in advance is critical. You cannot just show up for class. Cancelling is just as important (in a timely fashion) so another person can take your slot. You can pay for classes on-line (which you could always do) but for those who never learned how to do this, now is the time. 😉 You can even check yourselves in --easy peasy!Masks are mandatory for Yoga but optional for Zumba, MixxedFit, Strength, and Spinning. I will install air purifiers* in the Multi-purpose room, Spinning room and Personal Training area to clean and circulate the air. The air purifiers (each) will clean 700 square feet every 30 minutes. They will kill airborne germs and mold spores, dust, dander, allergens, odors plus bacteria. They include an antimicrobial compound that helps kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses including the flu.CAVEAT: The air purifiers alone will not kill Covid19/Coronavirus but with Social distancing, the wearing of masks, washing our hands, using hand sanitizer, air circulation, etc. we’re ahead of the game!As we find new ways to work, reconnect, and stay grounded in these difficult times, I want to take a moment to honor the SMART Fitness Studio staff who are committed to bringing you the best class possible each and everytime! I just couldn't go another day without talking to you about all that's coming at us right now with the Coronavirus in the news.In the midst of the turmoil and stress and that accompany these kinds of changes, I wanted to bring some perspective and proactivity.My first words: Fear not There's a lot of information coming at us, and it is changing from moment to moment.That can be scary, but fear not. Fear is an energy and it attracts the very thing we want to avoid.We can take practical measures like washing our hands and staying in the house, and in the midst of that all...fear not.Because fear is not going to keep a virus away from you, but what fear does is creates thoughts and energies in your mind that lead you into a state of stress and anxiety. And if a flu doesn't make you sick, the chronic stress will.In light of that, I want to talk about some things we can do to keep ourselves calm and peaceful — so that no matter what happens, whether we face this health challenge or not, that we will be okay.Start your day with some prayer and get grounded, so that what you hear in the world doesn't create stress in your body.You can work with these affirmations:God is Light. The light that is God fills my mind, my heart, my body and my soul NOW. I Am a child of God, filled with and surrounded by the Perfecting Light that is God. Every aspect of my mind, life and being is NOW brought into perfect and harmonious alignment with the light that is God. I Am the light that is God. The light that is God guides me NOW.God is Radiant Health. God’s Radiant Presence fills every aspect of my being NOW. I Am a child of God filled with and surrounded by the Radiant Presence of Health that is God. Every aspect of my mind, life and being is NOW brought into perfect and harmonious alignment with the radiant health that is God and, that manifests and demonstrates as my natural state of health. I AM the Radiant Health that God is. How Strength Training Helps Your HealthHow does strength training and weight training help with your health?1. Strength training makes you stronger and fitter.This benefit is the obvious one, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. Muscle strength is crucial in making it easier to do the things you need to do on a day-to-day basis — especially as we get older and naturally start to lose muscle.Strength training is also called resistance training because it involves strengthening and toning your muscles by contracting them against a resisting force. There are two types of resistance training:Isometric resistance involves contracting your muscles against a nonmoving object, such as against the floor in a push-up.
