Ashtanga is the original flow practice from India.
Ashtanga Yoga is a system of Yoga asanas popularized in modern times by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. The name Ashtanga Yoga means “8 limbs” in Sanskrit. It is a reference to the 8-part method of practice in the ancient text, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Ashtanga Yoga is traditionally taught in a fixed sequential order with the system consisting of six different series in all. However, we will do a short form in this class. An Ashtanga class traditionally ends with a finishing pose series including backbends, shoulder-stand, headstand variations, a few other poses and savasana, the corpse pose, as a final relaxation.
The practice is accessible to students of all levels -- it's about exploration and adventure! If you're new to the Ashtanga system, we offer modifications, use of props, and lots of chances to rest and observe.
Simple yet Satisfying
This class is designed to develop the foundations of a structurally sound yoga practice. Learn how to deepen your practice through alignment focused postures which is important for injury prevention.
Emphasis is given to easing tension and tightness in the lower back, improving flexibility in the hips and shoulders, transitioning safely between postures, and breathing properly while “playing the edge.” The psychological aspects of the practice are explored as students learn how to soothe their nervous systems during deep stretches with sustained, meditative holds.
Yoga Basics classes help students proceed intelligently toward more advanced postures as well as prepare them for faster-paced Flow classes. Ideal for any student that wants to gain a better understanding of the postures and the practice.
Great for Beginner Students; however, more advanced students are welcome and encouraged to practice at their own level.
Better Backs is a well-rounded practice that both energizes and relaxes by integrating passive and active postures, along with stretching and strengthening movements focused on strengthening the spine. Poses include flowing sequences that are interspersed with statically held poses.
The level of challenge can be adjusted to lower or greater intensity based on the desire and needs of each student. Knitted together with pranayama-breathwork and meditation.
Appropriate for new beginners to advanced practitioners
Concentration on Alignment, Body Mechanics.
Slow Flow Yoga, in some ways, has more traditional roots going back to the founder. This style usually provides poses that range from gentle to challenging, but done with stable, self-centering energy. The pace of these classes is understandably slower and emphasis is placed on safe alignment and the maintaining balance of the slow breathing. This style can vary tremendously in its speed, with some classes preferring long, silent periods of reflection and static holding during each pose, and others opting for a more fluid experience (with possible frequent bursts of energetic sequencing to raise energy). The toned-down speed of these classes does not, however, mean that the poses are any less beneficial for building strength, stability, and postural integrity than other styles. This slower pace is definitely for those who want to be in the pose completely before advancing to the next pose.
One of the most beautiful aspects of yoga, is that it invites practitioners from all backgrounds, ability levels, and personal goals to share in the benefits of yoga and hopefully even transform the world towards peace and goodwill.
Intermediate to advanced students enjoy a Slow Flow, however beginners are encouraged to give it a try.
Yin Yoga is a style of yoga that focuses on the passive holding of postures for longer periods of time (3 to 4 minutes). These longer holds benefit the connective tissues of the body such as ligaments, bones and joints. Longer holds also give the body and mind time to slow down and drop into stillness, cultivating a meditative component of practice.
You will experience a hands-on approach in this class with aromatherapy and basic massage.
•Helps to relieve muscle tension
•Improves mobility and flexibility
•Reduces the risk of injury
•Improves blood flow
•Aids in full body symmetry
•Creates more space, energy, and freedom in your body
This class is a wonderful compliment to traditional yang (flow-based) yoga styles of practice.
All levels are welcome.
